Job summary

Leidos seeks a Transportation Data Scientist (junior to mid-level) to develop and deploy AI/ML models for FHWA-funded freight analytics, traffic safety, and operations projects. The role involves data integration, model evaluation, and collaboration with state DOTs and agencies, supporting trusted AI in a federally funded environment.

Based in McLean, VA, the position requires US work authorization, a Public Trust clearance, and up to 20% travel.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a related field and 2+ years of data science/AI experience.
• Hands-on experience in AI solution development and ML model deployment.
• Experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Scikit-learn.
• Experience with data preparation, ETL, and multimodal data (images, sensor data, time-series).
• Ability to communicate complex AI concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Assist in literature reviews and data collection for AI methods in transportation.
• Prepare and integrate datasets from multiple sources (logs, imagery, weather).
• Develop and deploy AI/ML models for transportation applications.
• Evaluate model performance and propose improvements for robustness and scalability.
• Engage with stakeholders (state DOTs, MPOs, vendors) to gather insights.
• Ensure alignment with USDOT goals and federal standards.
• Contribute to progress reporting and iterative model refinement.
