Job summary

Battelle is seeking a Transportation Automation and AI Specialist in a hybrid DC Metro region role (part-time or full-time). The position leads AI, ML, and automation applications across surface transportation, collaborates with engineers, data scientists, and cybersecurity experts, and supports proposals and client engagements.

The ideal candidate has 10+ years in transportation tech, PMP certification, and strong data analytics experience, with a background in ITS/TSMO and governance of AI

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Transportation Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Data Science, AI, Robotics or related technical discipline.
• 10+ years of professional experience in transportation technology, ITS, AI, automation, robotics, or advanced transportation research.
• Active PMP certification.
• Experience applying AI/ML techniques to complex operational environments.
• Knowledge of TSMO, ITS, and related transportation programs.
• Experience with data analytics, predictive modeling, and decision support systems.
• Ability to work with government and industry clients.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership in applying AI, ML, automation, and analytics to transportation systems.
• Evaluate ADS/CDA technologies and advise on applicability to programs.
• Develop AI-enabled solutions for transportation operations, safety, mobility, infrastructure and asset management.
• Design and evaluate AI models for ITS/TSMO/connected vehicle deployment.
• Support research, testing, evaluation and deployment of transportation automation technologies.
• Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity specialists, and systems engineers.
• Support proposal development, client engagement, and presentations.
• Prepare technical reports, strategic plans, and white papers.
