Job summary

The City of Modesto is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Crewleader to lead maintenance and repair of a diverse transit fleet. You will schedule and review work, supervise skilled and semi-skilled staff, and support essential transit services across diesel, electric, hydrogen, and CNG vehicles.

Essential duties include diagnosing and repairing engines, transmissions, HVAC, and high-voltage components, with welding and fabrication as needed. No remote work; equal opportunity employer.

Qualifications

• Four years of progressively responsible heavy equipment maintenance experience.
• Valid Class A or B CDL with endorsements; within 60 days of appointment.
• EPA regulations compliance; Vehicle Emission Control License desirable; MVAC cert within 1 year.
• ASE certifications in four areas within one year of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Plan, prioritize, and review work of staff in maintenance and repair of City transit buses and equipment.
• Develop schedules and methods to accomplish assignments.
• Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical difficulties on City buses and equipment.
• Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and air systems.
• Weld, fabricate, and assemble parts for buses and heavy equipment; use welding equipment and tools.
• Maintain work, time, and material records.
