Job summary

City of Modesto is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Crewleader to lead maintenance and repair operations for the City’s transit fleet, including diesel, electric, hydrogen, and CNG buses. You will supervise a team of mechanics, schedule work, and ensure high-quality repairs to keep thousands of riders served safely and reliably.

You will oversee complex repairs, train staff, and coordinate with vendors, with salary incentives based on education levels.

Qualifications

• Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
• High School diploma or GED, plus specialized training in gas- and diesel-powered equipment maintenance.
• Valid California Class A or B commercial driver’s license with endorsements within 60 days; EPA and ASE certifications as required.

Responsibilities

• Plan, prioritize, and review work of staff on transit buses and other gas- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
• Develop schedules and methods to complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner.
• Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical difficulties on City transit buses and other equipment.
• Schedule maintenance, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electric transit buses and high voltage components.
• Weld, fabricate, and assemble parts for City transit buses and heavy equipment; fabricate vehicle frames, exhaust systems, and related parts.
• Maintain work, time, and material records; assist in purchasing maintenance parts and materials.
