Job summary

Virginia Transformer Corp in Roanoke, VA, seeks a Transformer Test Engineer to develop, execute, and analyze electrical tests on power and distribution transformers, ensuring compliance with customer specs and industry standards.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, IEC, and NETA testing standards.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and transformer drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and oversee routine, design, and special electrical tests on power and distribution transformers.
  • Review transformer designs and identify testing requirements.
  • Troubleshoot abnormal test results and assist root cause investigations.
  • Develop test procedures and documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance to Test Technicians.
  • Support FAT and witness testing.
  • Ensure testing complies with OSHA and safety requirements.

Position Summary

The Transformer Test Engineer is responsible for developing, executing, and analyzing electrical testing of power and distribution transformers to ensure compliance with customer specifications, IEEE, ANSI, IEC, and internal quality standards.

This position serves as the technical expert within the test laboratory, supporting manufacturing, engineering, and quality teams to ensure every transformer meets the highest standards before shipment.

Responsibilities
Electrical Testing
  • Perform and oversee routine, design, and special electrical tests on power and distribution transformers.
  • Execute testing including:
  • Applied Voltage
  • Induced Voltage
  • Winding Resistance
  • Insulation Resistance
  • Excitation Current
  • No-Load and Load Losses
  • Verify testing meets IEEE C57, ANSI, IEC, and customer specifications.
  • Develop test procedures and documentation.
  • Review transformer designs and identify testing requirements.
  • Troubleshoot abnormal test results.
  • Support root cause investigations and corrective actions.
  • Analyze electrical data and prepare technical reports.
Manufacturing Support
  • Partner with Engineering, Production, and Quality to resolve technical issues.
  • Support production during final assembly and factory acceptance testing (FAT).
  • Assist customers during witness testing.
  • Provide technical guidance to Test Technicians.
  • Improve laboratory efficiency and testing methods.
  • Recommend new testing equipment and automation opportunities.
  • Standardize testing processes across facilities.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure all testing activities comply with OSHA and electrical safety requirements.
  • Maintain calibration records and laboratory documentation.
  • Promote a culture of safety and quality throughout the testing organization.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of electrical testing experience in power transformers, switchgear, motors, generators, utilities, or other high-voltage equipment.
  • Strong understanding of transformer theory and operation.
  • Experience with IEEE, ANSI, IEC, and NETA testing standards.
  • Experience reading electrical schematics and transformer drawings.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing abilities.
  • Ability to work directly with customers during witness testing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience testing medium or large power transformers.
  • Experience with Omicron, Doble, Vanguard, Megger, or similar electrical test equipment.
  • Understanding of factory acceptance testing (FAT).
  • Knowledge of transformer manufacturing processes.
  • EIT or Professional Engineer (PE) certification is a plus.
  • Experience supporting utility or EPC customers.
