Job summary

City of Birmingham is seeking a qualified Traffic Systems Engineer to coordinate traffic studies, road construction reviews, and accident analyses, promoting public safety and compliance with standards. Duties include developing plans to improve traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and street lighting, and supervising design of traffic control systems.

The role involves reviewing data from staff analyses, overseeing traffic operations, and ensuring federal and local guidelines are met.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, or higher, in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or another closely related degree.
  • Driver's license.
  • Be currently enrolled and actively working toward graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or another closely related degree, within 6 months of the opening date of this job announcement.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and analyzes data from traffic studies using computer software to evaluate results and determine interventions for traffic and roadway safety issues.
  • Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental budgets by reviewing spending trends and ensuring expenditures stay within annual budgetary limits.
  • Communicates with coworkers, supervisors, governmental agencies or departments, private contractors, and the public to identify and solve traffic flow problems.
  • Operates and maintains the central traffic computer operations and other signal systems to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.
  • Oversees the design of traffic control systems using civil engineering practices, standards, specifications, and regulations.
  • Plans, coordinates, and oversees traffic studies to investigate issues with signs, markings, lighting, warrants, school zones, crossings, lane widening, and road construction to ensure roadway safety and compliance.
  • Reviews and processes permit requests to minimize traffic disruptions.
  • Supervises staff by assigning work, monitoring progress, and providing feedback and training.
