Job summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking a qualified Traffic Systems Engineer to coordinate traffic studies, road construction reviews, and accident analyses to promote public safety and ensure standards compliance. Responsibilities include planning traffic studies, overseeing signals, reviewing permits, and supervising staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or another closely related degree; Driver's license.
  • Be currently enrolled and actively working toward graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or another closely related degree, within 6 months of the opening date of this job announcement; Driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and analyzes data from traffic studies to evaluate results and determine interventions to traffic and roadway safety issues.
  • Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental budgets within annual limits.
  • Communicates with agencies, contractors, and the public to resolve traffic flow issues.
  • Operates and maintains central traffic computer operations and signal systems to ensure safe traffic flow.
  • Oversees the design of traffic control systems using civil engineering standards and regulations.
  • Plans, coordinates, and oversees traffic studies to ensure roadway safety and compliance with rules.
  • Reviews and processes permit requests to minimize traffic disruptions.
  • Supervises staff, assigns work, and provides training.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or another closely related degree
Driver's license
