Job summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking a Traffic Systems Engineer to coordinate traffic studies, review road construction plans, and analyze accidents to improve safety and compliance with federal and local standards. The role develops plans to optimize traffic flow, enhance pedestrian safety, and ensure adequate street lighting.

You will oversee design of traffic control systems, review data from staff, manage the budget, communicate with agencies and the public, operate central traffic computer

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil/Electrical/Computer Engineering or related field.
  • Driver's license required.
  • Option B requires enrollment toward a bachelor's degree within 6 months of opening date.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and analyzes data from traffic studies to evaluate results and determine interventions for traffic and roadway safety.
  • Prepares and administers departmental budget within annual limits.
  • Communicates with staff, agencies, contractors, and the public to solve traffic flow problems.
  • Operates and maintains central traffic computer systems to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.
  • Oversees the design of traffic control systems using civil engineering standards and codes.
  • Plans, coordinates, and oversees traffic studies to address signs, markings, lighting, warrants, school zones, crossings, lane widening, construction reviews, and accident analyses.
  • Reviews and processes permit requests to minimize traffic disruptions.
  • Supervises staff by assigning work, training, and monitoring progress.

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
Currently enrolled in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related degree, within 6 months of opening date
