Job summary

The City of Birmingham is seeking a qualified Traffic Planning Technician to plan and conduct traffic studies in line with MUTCD guidelines. This role collects data, analyzes patterns, and inspects traffic control devices in the field to ensure proper operation and visibility.

Responsibilities include supporting Traffic Analysts and Engineers, maintaining records, and communicating with agencies and the public. The position offers competitive pay and benefits.

Qualifications

  • Driver's license.
  • Experience applying technical standards (e.g. MUTCD) to design and/or construction projects while following applicable local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Experience drawing and reading technical drawings and descriptions such as maps, plans, specification sheets, field reviews to determine information such as location, scale, dimensions.
  • Experience using spreadsheets, databases, and processing computer software (Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) in order to maintain documentation, create reports and maps.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects the condition of roadways and traffic control devices (e.g., traffic signals, traffic signs, street lights, pavement markings) to ensure their safe operation, proper visibility, and overall compliance with traffic engineering plans and MUTCD regulations.
  • Communicates with coworkers, supervisors, external agencies or departments, private contractors, and members of the public using verbal, written, and electronic communication, in order to identify and solve problems related to roadways and traffic control devices.
  • Creates and maintains records, databases, and files using paper and electronic means in order to ensure that records are accurate and able to be systematically accessed and retrieved.
  • Provides support to Traffic Analysts and Engineers during traffic studies by assisting them with equipment setup and data collection according to established policies and procedures for conducting traffic studies.
