Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a Traffic Signal Engineer to develop or review corridor timings, research information, and implement changes to optimize signal performance. You will install communication devices, troubleshoot, and provide technical support for signals and interconnect systems.

Qualifications

• Experience in traffic signal design and operations.
• Ability to communicate technical information orally and in writing.
• Knowledge of federal, state rules, regulations, policies and standards relative to traffic control devices.
• Knowledge of traffic signal operations, system and maintenance operations, local intersection and master controller unit operational functions and traffic signal system coordination timing design.
• Ability to interpret plans, specifications and contracts.
• Ability to gather and analyze data and prepare technical reports.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate traffic signal timings with local jurisdictions across regions.
• Develop plans for coordinated signal timings and oversee design and maintenance processes.
• Investigate complaints and prepare responses regarding traffic signal operations.
• Develop closed-loop traffic responsive signal systems and adjust timings for efficiency.
• Provide engineering technology solutions to complex cases and projects.
• Maintain records and databases for activities in the program area.
• Represent VDOT with outside contacts, including contractors and the public.
