Job summary

SpiveyServices in Virginia is seeking a Traffic Control Supervisor II, a mid-level field leadership role responsible for overseeing traffic control crews, coordinating complex work zone operations, and ensuring full compliance with VWAPM, project specs, and company safety standards.

This position serves as a critical field leader—providing advanced decision-making, crew oversight, quality control, and direct communication with contractors, inspectors, and company management.

Qualifications

  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, and emergency deployments.
  • 3–5 years traffic control or construction field experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of VWAPM traffic control principles.
  • Experience managing crews and complex work zone setups.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and implement traffic control plans independently.
  • Experience driving larger trucks (18’–24’), non-CDL.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and perform physically demanding outdoor work.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and travel across regional jobsites.
  • Pass a criminal background check and drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee traffic control crews and ensure all work zones are set up, monitored, and removed according to VWAPM and project requirements.
  • Conduct daily field audits, verify compliance, and execute corrective actions.
  • Perform stationary and mobile lane closures on limited-access highways with proper setup and monitoring.
  • Serve as the primary on-site contact for contractors, inspectors, and leadership for assigned projects.
  • Review and interpret complex traffic control plans to ensure crews execute layouts accurately and efficiently.
  • Coordinate daily job readiness, staffing, and equipment deployment.
  • Adjust work zone setups in real time to respond to emergencies and safety concerns.
  • Provide hands-on training to new employees, flaggers, and Supervisors I personnel.
  • Model and enforce high standards of safety, productivity, and professionalism.
  • Participate in onboarding, skills assessments, and development of junior supervisors.
  • Maintain accurate logs of job activities, crew attendance, safety observations, and incident reports.
  • Ensure vehicles and equipment are properly maintained and stocked.
  • Communicate daily operational updates to Traffic Operations Manager or department head.
  • Champion a safety-first culture across all crews and sites.
  • Conduct hazard assessments and lead tailgate meetings with multiple crews.
  • Respond to and help manage field incidents or near-misses per company protocols.

KeyResponsibilities
  • Overseetrafficcontrolcrewsandensureallworkzonesaresetup,monitored,andremovedaccordingtoVWAPMandproject‑specificrequirements.
  • Conductdailyfieldaudits,verifycompliance,andexecutecorrectiveactionswhennecessary.
  • Performbothstationaryandmobilelaneclosuresonlimited‑accesshighways,ensuringpropersetup,monitoring,andbreakdownoftrafficcontroldevicesinaccordancewithstateandfederalsafetystandards.
  • Serveastheprimaryon‑sitepointofcontactforcontractors,inspectors,andcompanyleadershipforassignedprojects.
  • Reviewandinterpretcomplextrafficcontrolplans;ensurecrewsexecutelayoutsaccuratelyandefficiently.
  • Coordinatedailyjobreadiness,staffing,andequipmentdeployment.
  • Adjustworkzonesetupsinrealtimetorespondtoemergencyconditions,projectchanges,orsafetyconcerns.
  • Providehands‑ontrainingtonewemployees,Flaggers,TrafficControlAssistants,andSupervisorIpersonnel.
