Job summary

The New York City Department of Transportation is seeking a Traffic Control Inspector, Level 1, in the Signals Timing and Intersection Control Unit. You will conduct traffic studies, assess signals, LPIs, and implement improvements across all five boroughs.

Responsibilities include analyzing conditions, recommending changes to signs, signals, APS, and curbside controls, with preference for candidates who can drive in New York and have ongoing civil service eligibility.

Qualifications

  • Four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization, and two years of full time satisfactory experience in vehicular traffic regulation and control or in conducting traffic studies.
  • An Associate of Applied Science degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering technology, urban studies, urban planning, mathematics or another closely related field;
  • A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and a satisfactory combination of experience and/or college education that is equivalent to that described in 1 or 2 above.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct surveys and studies for traffic signals, All-Way Stop controls, left-turn treatments, and LPIs across all five boroughs.
  • Study traffic conditions to identify ways to reduce congestion and crashes and improve operation of street facilities.
  • Make recommendations regarding traffic signs, signals (including modifications), APS, street lighting, pavement markings, and other traffic control devices.
