Job summary

New York City Department of Transportation seeks an Assistant Civil Engineer to support the Signals Timing & Intersection Control Unit on bus priority street projects. You will assist with geometric layouts, bus lanes, traffic studies, and CAD/GIS documentation to support feasibility and implementation.

The role emphasizes collaboration with MTA, planners, and community stakeholders, ensuring ADA/MUTCD compliance and Vision Zero alignment. NYC residency not required for this position.

Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  • A Bachelor's degree plus a Master's degree in civil engineering.
  • Familiarity with bus priority projects, transit operations, or curbside management.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing geometric layouts, bus lanes, curbside regulations, intersection treatments, and transit priority street configurations.
  • Conduct traffic studies, bus speed assessments, turning movement counts, and safety analyses to support design decisions.
  • Prepare CAD drawings, concept plans, signing/striping layouts, and technical exhibits for internal review and external partners.
  • Document existing conditions, verify measurements, assess constraints, and support feasibility evaluations for proposed bus priority treatments.
  • Support analysis and implementation of Transit Signal Priority (TSP), queue jumps, and signal timing adjustments.
  • Collaborate with planners, operations teams, borough engineers, MTA staff, utilities, and community stakeholders.
  • Assist with shop drawing review, field checks, punch lists, and verification of installed bus priority elements.
  • Maintain GIS layers, project databases, and engineering records related to bus lanes, stops, signals, and curb regulations.
  • Ensure designs meet ADA standards, MUTCD requirements, NYC Street Design Guidelines, and Vision Zero principles.
  • Some assignments may require a driver's license. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a driver's license valid in the state of New York.
