Job description

The Toolmaker is responsible for making precision tools, special guides, holding devices, punch dies, die cast and trim tools, modifying and repairing the tools used in the manufacturing process. The toolmaker will use appropriate equipment such as surface grinders, wire EDMs, vertical CNCs, milling machines, lathes, and other equipment to create and make tooling to match part drawings.

The Location: Wisconsin Plastic Products, Inc. is located in Plymouth, WI.

Job Type: Full-Time

Shift: 1st or 2nd

Pay: Based on experience

Experience and Qualifications
  • Associates Degree, Journeyman status, or equivalent experience in machinist trade
  • Basic knowledge of materials such as steel alloys (differentiate alloy numbers), bronze, aluminum, and cast iron
  • Knowledge of suitable equipment considering efficiency, accuracy, resources, and equipment limits
  • Proficiency with measuring equipment, both manual and electronic (Micrometers, Vernier calipers, height gauges, pro-mikes)
Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This job operates in a tool shop and manufacturing environment.

Physical Demands

The physical demands include working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to high noise levels, wearing eye and ear protection, standing for long periods, exposure to metals, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Toolmaker will:

  • Use machinery such as lathes, presses, EDMs, milling machines, and grinders to shape tools.
  • Follow engineering drawings to measure and mark designs for tools.
  • Communicate with the manufacturing team regarding needs and quality issues.
  • Assist with tool maintenance and conduct test runs to ensure quality.
  • Cut, shape, and trim blanks or blocks to specified sizes using power saws, shears, and hand tools.
  • File, grind, shim, and adjust parts for proper fit.
  • Assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools using machine and hand tools.
  • Inspect finished dies for quality and defects.
  • Read blueprints and schematics to manufacture fixtures, tools, and machine parts.
  • Troubleshoot and repair dies and molds.
  • Inspect completed tooling for imperfections or damage.
  • Set up and operate CNC and conventional machine tools to shape parts.
  • Operate drill presses for drilling and tapping holes.
  • Smooth and polish surfaces of parts or tools.
  • Verify dimensions and tolerances using measuring instruments.
  • Design jigs, fixtures, and templates for fabrication aids.
  • Lift, position, and secure parts using hoists, vises, and other tools.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe metal or plastic stock for machining.
  • Select appropriate metals and alloys based on properties.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area for safety.
