About the Role:

The Tooling Technician I plays a critical role in supporting manufacturing operations by ensuring that all tooling equipment is maintained, calibrated, and functioning at optimal levels. This position involves hands‑on work with precision measuring instruments and various machine tools to support the production of high‑quality components. The technician will be responsible for performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on plastic injection molds (cold or hot runner), tooling, and machinery to minimize downtime and maintain production schedules. Collaboration with engineering and production teams is essential to implement tooling improvements and ensure compliance with safety standards. Ultimately, the role contributes to the efficiency and accuracy of the manufacturing process, directly impacting product quality and operational success.

The required skills such as the use of calipers and micrometers are essential for precise measurement and quality control in daily tasks. Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) maintenance skills enable the technician to keep specialized equipment running smoothly, reducing production delays. Proficiency in CNC lathe operation, grinder maintenance, and milling machines allows the technician to support various machining processes effectively. Handling cutting tools and performing mold repairs require attention to detail and manual dexterity to maintain tooling integrity. Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintains and repairs injection molds to support production requirements of a multi‑shift, 35‑press facility.
  • Repairs cavities and cores due to damage or wear.
  • Completes engineering changes and revisions to injection molds.
  • Instructs other toolmakers and trainees in the operation and setup of tool room equipment.
  • Manufactures and/or replaces tooling components with minimal supervision and a high degree of accuracy and competency.
  • Maintains accurate mold history/records.
  • Build fixtures and gages as needed.
  • Operates and maintains precision measuring instruments such as calipers and micrometers to verify tooling dimensions and tolerances.
  • Performs routine maintenance and troubleshooting on Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) equipment to ensure consistent performance.
  • Assist in the operation and upkeep of CNC lathes, grinders, and milling machines, including tool changes and adjustments.
  • Handles cutting tools and performs mold repair tasks to support ongoing manufacturing needs.
  • Adhere to tool room safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized work environment to promote safety and efficiency.
  • Observes all health and safety requirements and maintains the work area in a neat and orderly condition.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of experience in tool room or job shop machining environment (or equivalent experience)
  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Must have basic understanding of mold components, A side cavity, B side core, EJ pins, core pins, slide locks, angle pins, etc.
  • Must have basic understanding of Cartesian coordinate systems, cutting tools, and tool holding principles.
  • Must have intermediate print reading skills and a working knowledge of GD&T.
  • Must have familiarity of tool room equipment; CNC milling, surface grinders, surface grinder wheel dressing, Lathe, Sine chuck, spin fixtures, sinker EDM etc. ‘
  • Must have knowledge of mold polishing.
  • Can act as back up for PM Tooling when required.
  • Ability to set up and operates lathes, milling machines, electrical discharge machines, and surface grinders as needed.
  • Ability to competently use calipers, micrometers, and other handheld measuring tools typical to a machining environment.
  • Must have basic understanding of Metallurgy, types of steels, and materials that may be used in an injection mold.
  • Must have basic ability to 3D model and create CNC programming for simple mold components (date pins, engraving, etc.).
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge and experience using calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring tools.
  • Familiarity with CNC lathe operation and grinder maintenance.
  • Understanding of tool maintenance and handling cutting tools safely.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and work collaboratively in a manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) maintenance.
  • Experience with milling machines and mold repair techniques.
  • Technical training or certification related to tooling or machining.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to pass all pre‑employment screenings.

Must be able to stand the entire shift (8+ hrs.).

Ability to lift up to 50lbs.

  • Moderate physical demand, working frequently with medium‑weight material and occasionally with heavy weight material.
  • Must be able to work standing for extended periods of time and maintain dexterity when handling tooling components.
