Job summary

Axjo Group is seeking a Mold/Tooling Technician to maintain, service, and repair injection molding tooling to keep production running smoothly.

You will perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and corrective repairs, while documenting activities in the CMMS and managing spare parts inventory. Coordinate with external shops when major repairs are needed to improve tooling reliability and minimize downtime.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on injection molds and production tooling.
  • Inspect molds for wear, damage, contamination, corrosion, and other conditions.
  • Disassemble, clean, inspect, service, and reassemble injection molds and tooling components as required.
  • Perform troubleshooting and corrective repairs on injection molding tooling.
  • Service mold components including ejector systems, slides, lifters, guide pins and bushings, cooling circuits, hydraulic and pneumatic components.
  • Identify recurring tooling failures or abnormal wear and communicate findings to relevant teams.
  • Complete assigned preventive and corrective maintenance work orders in the CMMS.
  • Create work orders for identified tooling repairs and follow-up maintenance.
  • Accurately document maintenance activities, observations, and tooling conditions in CMMS.
  • Maintain tooling maintenance history and ensure timely closure of work orders.
  • Identify and maintain appropriate spare parts inventories for molds and tooling.
  • Monitor spare parts usage and initiate replenishment requests as required.

Job description

Position Summary

The Mold / Tooling Technician is responsible for the maintenance, servicing, and repair of existing injection molding tooling used in production operations. This position supports manufacturing by ensuring molds and associated tooling are maintained in safe, reliable, and production-ready condition.

The primary focus of this position is preventive maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and corrective repair of production molds. Responsibilities include identifying worn or damaged components, replacing serviceable mold components, performing routine tooling repairs, and coordinating specialized or major tooling repairs with external tool shops or other qualified resources when required.

This position is also responsible for maintaining accurate tooling maintenance records within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), creating and managing work orders, and maintaining appropriate spare parts inventories for production tooling.

This position is focused on the maintenance and reliability of existing production tooling and is not primarily responsible for new mold construction, extensive machining, or major mold modifications.

The primary objective of this role is to improve tooling reliability, minimize unplanned production downtime, and support consistent manufacturing performance through effective preventive and corrective tooling maintenance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on injection molds and production tooling in accordance with established maintenance schedules and procedures.
  • Inspect molds for wear, damage, contamination, corrosion, and other conditions that may impact tooling performance or product quality.
  • Disassemble, clean, inspect, service, and reassemble injection molds and tooling components as required.
  • Perform troubleshooting and corrective repairs on injection molding tooling, including replacement or repair of worn and damaged components.
  • Service mold components including, but not limited to, ejector systems, slides, lifters, guide pins and bushings, cooling circuits, hydraulic components, pneumatic components, hot runner systems, and other mold mechanisms.
  • Identify recurring tooling failures or abnormal wear conditions and communicate findings to Production, Process, Maintenance, Engineering, and Management as appropriate.
  • Support troubleshooting of production issues when tooling condition or performance is suspected as a contributing factor.
  • Complete assigned preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance work orders in the CMMS system.
  • Create work orders for identified tooling repairs, follow-up maintenance activities, and additional work discovered during inspections or servicing.
  • Accurately document maintenance activities, repairs performed, components replaced, observations, and tooling conditions in the CMMS system.
  • Maintain accurate tooling maintenance history and ensure completed work orders are closed in a timely manner.
  • Identify and maintain appropriate spare parts inventories for molds and tooling.
  • Monitor spare parts usage and inventory levels and initiate replenishment requests as required.
  • Assist in establishing minimum and maximum inventory levels for critical tooling spare parts and components.
  • Ensure tooling spare parts are properly identified, organized, stored, and maintained.
  • Maintain mold maintenance areas, tooling workspaces, tools, and equipment in a clean, organized, and production-ready condition.
  • Follow established procedures for mold handling, storage, preservation, and preparation for production.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities focused on tooling reliability, preventive maintenance effectiveness, and reduction of tooling-related production downtime.
  • Assist in developing and improving preventive maintenance procedures, inspection standards, checklists, and tooling maintenance documentation.
  • Coordinate with external tool shops and service providers when tool repairs or specialized services are required.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable Lockout/Tagout requirements when performing maintenance and repair activities.
  • Perform other tooling and maintenance-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Previous experience working with injection molds, tooling, mold maintenance, or a related manufacturing maintenance function.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot mechanical tooling issues.
  • Ability to safely disassemble, inspect, service, and reassemble injection molding tooling.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, tooling drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment and standard tooling maintenance equipment.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to accurately document maintenance activities electronically.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize maintenance activities, and respond to production needs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical education, vocational training, or apprenticeship experience in mold maintenance, tool and die, machining, industrial maintenance, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience maintaining injection molds in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Experience working with hot runner systems and associated components.
  • Experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Experience with tooling spare parts management and inventory control.
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement, preventive maintenance, or tooling reliability programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of injection mold construction and mold components.
  • Understanding of preventive and corrective maintenance principles.
  • Ability to identify abnormal tooling wear and potential failure conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate maintenance documentation.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple maintenance priorities.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to maintain tooling and spare parts inventories.
  • Ability to communicate tooling conditions and technical issues clearly to Production, Maintenance, Engineering, and Management.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Welding experience and the ability to perform basic tooling-related weld repairs is beneficial but not required.
  • Familiarity or experience operating manual milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, and other common tool and die or machine shop equipment is preferred but not required.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, equipment reliability, and continuous improvement.
Physical Demands/Requirements
  • Must be able to stand, stoop, reach, grasp, sit or stand for long periods of time, and lift up to a maximum of 50 lbs. safely.
  • Noise level in the manufacturing area can at times can be loud and may require hearing protection.
  • Must be willing and able to abide by all safety policies.
  • Must be able to work in a non-climate controlled plant environment.
  • Standard hazards within a manufacturing plant where safety precautions and personal protective equipment must be maintained at all times.
  • Full-time day shift, overtime as needed. Possible weekend/holiday word
