Job summary

Universal Metal Products is seeking a Tooling Engineer to design and improve progressive dies, fixtures, and secondary tooling for precision metal stamping. The role blends independent design work with hands-on collaboration with toolmakers and manufacturing teams to translate concepts into practical tooling solutions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Tool-and-die apprenticeship or journeyperson certification, or equivalent experience.
• Six years of tool-and-die experience in a metal stamping environment.
• Proficiency in CAD modeling and drafting (Pro/ENGINEER, AutoCAD).
• Strong blueprint-reading, shop math, and GD&T skills.
• Knowledge of progressive dies, fixtures, gauges, tooling materials, and toolroom processes (wire EDM, CNC machining, grinding).
• Attention to detail and independent problem-solving and communication.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and model progressive dies and secondary tooling to meet part specifications.
• Create detailed 3D models, 2D drawings, component prints, and process sheets.
• Partner with engineering, manufacturing, and toolmakers to develop tooling concepts and resolve shop-floor challenges.
• Troubleshoot tooling issues and redesign existing tools to improve performance and manufacturability.
• Consider cost, standardization, materials, heat treatment, machining, and inspection requirements in tooling designs.
• Support safe work practices and established quality and environmental procedures.
