Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking a Thermal and EO/IR Modeling and Simulation Engineer to advance predictive capabilities for national defense programs, including IAMD. You will develop physics‑based thermal models and integrate with optical signatures in challenging environments.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical/Aerospace engineering with coursework in heat transfer, thermodynamics, numerical analysis, fluid dynamics
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, C++, or Shell
  • Experience using Linux-based computing environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain Interim Secret clearance by start date with final clearance

Responsibilities

  • Develop physics-based thermal models of missiles, rocket motor plumes, air platforms, and other relevant systems for IAMD programs
  • Integrate thermal results with optical characteristics using modeling toolkits to predict EO/IR signatures in exo- and endo-atmospheric environments
  • Interact with domain authorities to grow knowledge of weapon systems and improve analysis methodologies
  • Collaborate with senior developers to improve code suites and maintain EO/IR leadership in the community
  • Compare predictions with wind tunnel, laboratory, and flight test data and literature
  • Craft exploratory studies to characterize impacts of specific phenomena on weapon systems' performance
  • Document and present findings to government agencies and sponsors
