Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a creative Thermal and EO/IR Modeling and Simulation Engineer to advance physics-based thermal models for missiles, plumes, and air platforms, integrating results with optical characteristics to predict EO/IR signatures.

You will work with a dynamic team to push modeling capabilities, interact with government sponsors, and contribute to mission-critical defense programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical/Aerospace engineering (or related) +5 years experience or Master's degree +3 years experience.
  • Experience in physics-based modeling and simulation: heat transfer, radiation transport, aerothermodynamics, infrared signatures.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, C++, or Shell.
  • Familiarity with Linux-based computing environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • History of contributions to multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Ability to obtain Interim Secret clearance and eventual final Secret clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop physics-based thermal models of missiles, rocket motor plumes, air platforms, and other relevant systems to support programs including IAMD.
  • Integrate thermal results with optical characteristics to predict EO/IR signatures in exo- and endo-atmospheric environments.
  • Interact with domain authorities to grow knowledge related to weapon systems and improve analysis methodologies.
  • Collaborate with senior developers to improve existing code suites and maintain leadership in EO/IR signature community.
  • Compare predictions with wind tunnel, lab, flight test data, and literature.
  • Work independently and in teams to craft exploratory studies on phenomena affecting weapon systems performance.
  • Document and present findings to government agencies and sponsors.
