Job summary

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Thermal and EO/IR Modeling and Simulation Engineer to advance modeling capabilities for national defense programs in IAMD. You will develop physics-based thermal models of missiles and platforms, and integrate results with optical characteristics to predict EO/IR signatures in diverse environments.

You will collaborate with senior developers to improve code and methods, interface with government sponsors, and contribute to a leading

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical/Aerospace engineering or related field.
  • Experience with programming/scripting using Python, MATLAB, C++, or Shell.
  • Preferred experience with Linux based computing environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain Interim Secret clearance and eventual Final Secret clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop physics-based thermal models of missiles, rocket motor plumes, air platforms, and related systems for multiple programs, including IAMD.
  • Integrate thermal results with optical characteristics using modeling toolkits to predict EO/IR signatures in various environments.
  • Collaborate with domain authorities to broaden knowledge of weapon systems and improve analysis methods.
  • Work with senior developers to enhance code suites and maintain leadership in EO/IR signature analysis.
  • Compare predictions with wind tunnel, lab, flight test data and literature.
  • Conduct exploratory studies to assess effects of phenomena on weapon system performance.
  • Document and present findings to government agencies and sponsors.
