Job summary

Missouri Western State University in Saint Joseph, MO, is seeking an experienced Technical Director to manage all technical operations for Potter Theater. This is a yearly contract position beginning in August 2026, with responsibilities spanning lighting, sound, rigging, and stage setup/teardown for concerts and events.

The ideal candidate will lead technical aspects, collaborate closely with music faculty and performers, oversee safety standards, and recruit student crews for each performance.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2–3 years of professional experience in theatrical technical direction, lighting, sound, or stage management.
• Strong working knowledge of theatrical lighting consoles, sound reinforcement systems, and stage rigging.
• Experience supporting live music performances and large ensembles (preferred).
• Demonstrated commitment to safety and best practices in a performance venue.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work at heights when necessary.
• Reliable transportation required.

Responsibilities

• Lead all technical aspects of music events in Potter Theater: lighting, sound, rigging, and full stage setup/teardown.
• Collaborate with faculty, ensemble directors, and performers to realize artistic vision safely.
• Oversee lighting, sound, rigging, and stage elements; maintain a locked orchestra pit.
• Ensure setups meet safety standards and university policies for live venues.
• Recruit, train, and supervise student crews and volunteers for each event.
• Coordinate with facilities staff on maintenance or repairs to technical systems.
• Arrive early for load-in and stay until full strike and reset.
