Job summary

Missouri Western State University in Saint Joseph, MO, is seeking an experienced Technical Director to manage all technical operations for Potter Theater. Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and best practices in a performance venue.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work at heights when necessary.
  • Reliable transportation required.

Job Description

Missouri Western State University School of Fine Arts is seeking anexperienced Technical Director to manage all technical operationsfor musical performances and events in Potter Theater. This is a yearly contract position (subject to budget constraints andannual renewal) beginning in August 2026 . The TechnicalDirector will be responsible for the safe, professional, andefficient setup, operation, and strike of lighting, sound, rigging,and stage elements for concerts, recitals, choral performances,symphonic winds, and other large-ensemble music events.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead all technical aspects of music events in Potter Theater,including lighting design and operation, sound reinforcement, stagerigging, concert shell placement, and full stagesetup/teardown.
  • Collaborate closely with music faculty, ensemble directors, andperformers to realize their artistic vision safely andeffectively.
  • Oversee the safe operation of the theater’s lighting system,sound equipment, rigging points, and stage elements, including thepermanently locked orchestra pit.
  • Ensure all setups meet safety standards, best practices, anduniversity policies for live performance venues.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise student crew members andvolunteers for each event.
  • Coordinate with university facilities staff on any neededmaintenance or repairs to technical systems.
  • Arrive in advance for load-in and remain until full strike andreset is complete for each event.
