Could you turn “I hate reading” into “Can I read another one?”

Milk Education is looking for a Literacy Intervention Assistant to join a welcoming Primary School in Durham.

We’re looking for someone who can make reading feel fun, achievable and exciting for pupils who need a little extra support.

You’ll work with individuals and small groups, helping children develop their phonics, reading, vocabulary and comprehension skills while building the confidence they need to become independent learners.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Delivering 1:1 and small-group reading interventions.
  • Supporting phonics and word recognition.
  • Developing vocabulary and comprehension.
  • Helping pupils close literacy gaps.
  • Encouraging children to discover books they enjoy.
  • Building confidence in reluctant readers.
  • Adapting activities to different abilities.
  • Working closely with teachers to support pupil progress.
  • Celebrating every milestone — from reading a new word to finishing a whole book!
We’re Looking For…

Someone who is:

  • Patient, enthusiastic and encouraging.
  • A confident communicator.
  • Passionate about helping children learn.
  • Comfortable working 1:1 and with small groups.
  • Experienced in tutoring, education, childcare, youth work or similar — desirable but not essential.
  • A graduate or aspiring teacher.
  • Someone with volunteering or placement experience working with children.
  • Reliable and ready to make a genuine difference.
Why This Role?

Because one small breakthrough can change everything.

One new word.

One sentence read independently.

One child finally putting their hand up to read.

You could be the person who helps make that happen.

Why Milk Education?
  • Competitive rates of pay with temp-to-perm routes available.
  • Speedy registration process & fast-track compliance.
  • Flexible days and working hours to suit your schedule.
  • FREE CPD training.
  • FREE PSHE lesson plans and resources.
  • Educator Wellbeing support.
  • School Preparation Pack.
  • 24/7 support from your personal consultant.
  • Long-term and permanent opportunities.

This role is paid within the advertised pay scale. Your starting rate will be determined by your qualifications, relevant experience, and the requirements of the assignment.

All applicants will be subject to compliance checks in line with DfE, Keeping Children Safe in Education and APSCo guidelines.
