Job summary

Midland Garage Door is seeking a detail-oriented Test & Controls Technician to join our Engineering team in West Fargo. The role begins with wind load testing, equipment accreditation, and DASMA 108 compliant reporting, before transitioning to factory controls, automation, and engineering support at West Fargo and Salt Lake City facilities.

The position offers growth through hands-on testing, documentation, and modernization of aging PLCs, with emphasis on reliability and cross-site

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Two-year technical degree preferred in Mechatronics, Automation, Electrical Technology or related field.
• Experience with structured testing, instrumentation, or quality documentation is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Phase 1: achieve wind test equipment accreditation and execute tests per DASMA 108.
• Coordinate test specimen fabrication with production teams at two facilities.
• Set up and operate test equipment; record data in real time and generate test reports.
• Coordinate with PE for report review and seal; manage submissions to state authorities.
• Phase 2: support and modernize factory controls; assist with PLC programming and troubleshooting.
• Document control logic, wiring diagrams, and production line schematics.
• Audit and organize factory wiring to reduce downtime and improve reliability.

Test & Controls Technician

Monday – Friday 8:00am-5:00pm

Midland Garage Door has been in business for over 45 years, and we take pride in the quality products we deliver to our customers. We are seeking a detail-oriented Test & Controls Technician to join our growing Engineering team.

Summary

This position has two phases. In Phase 1 (approximately 9–18 months), the primary responsibility is executing Midland's WindGuard wind load testing and certification program — a structured effort to certify key residential and commercial door models to DASMA 108 standards for expanded. In Phase 2, this role transitions to ongoing factory controls, automation, and engineering support across Midland's West Fargo and Salt Lake City facilities.

Essential Duties

Phase 1 — Test technician

Midland is expanding its WindGuard offerings to new markets. This position will initially primarily focus on accreditation of the test equipment and executing tests for various models at different pressures for new and existing markets.

1. Achieve test facility accreditation for Midland’s wind test equipment.
2. Coordinate test specimen fabrication with production teams at both facilities, ensuring specimens are built to exact engineering specifications.
3. Set up and operate structural pressure test equipment; instrument doors with pressure transducers, deflection gauges, and data acquisition systems per DASMA 108 protocol.
4. Execute positive and negative pressure loading sequences, cycling tests, and structural overload tests; monitor and record all data in real time.
5. Compile complete test reports including raw data, observations, photos, and pass/fail determinations for PE review and state filing.
6. Coordinate with third-party Professional Engineer for report review and seal; manage submission packages to Texas and Florida product approval authorities.
7. Maintain organized test records and certification documentation for each model, size, and pressure tier tested.

Phase 2 — Controls & Engineering Support (Ongoing)

Upon completion of the wind testing program, this position transitions to factory controls and engineering support. Ongoing responsibilities include:

1. Support and provide redundancy to the existing controls technician — backup PLC programs, document control logic, and assist with factory troubleshooting at both facilities.
2. Assess, prioritize, and execute phased modernization of aging PLCs as needed.
3. Document production lines, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control logic currently undocumented — creating a reliable reference for maintenance and future upgrades.
4. Audit, label, and organize factory wiring at both facilities to reduce troubleshooting time and minimize unplanned downtime.
5. Support factory network infrastructure upgrade to improve reliability and prepare for automation integration.
6. Participate in ERP-to-automation integration project — prepare controls infrastructure, assist with testing and commissioning.
7. Diagnose and resolve issues with electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems as needed.
8. Conduct engineering tests to verify system functionality and performance on new and modified equipment.

Marginal Duties

Competencies Preferred

• Experience working with VFD’s, AC motors, Servos, Relays, Sensors, Barcode Scanners, Conveyors
• Experience integrating and troubleshoot PLC/HMI programming
• Experience with Allen Bradley hardware
• Metal fabrication (welding, machining, assembly)
• Experience reading electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
• Experience with robotic systems
• Strong problem-solving ability
• Basic computer networking skills
• Has a high level of attention to detail, organization, and follow-through skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED required. Two-year technical degree preferred in Mechatronics, Automation, Electrical Technology, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and hands‑on experience will be considered. Experience with structured testing, instrumentation, or quality documentation is a plus.
