Job summary

Abilene ISD is seeking substitute/temporary tutors to provide supplemental instructional services district-wide. You will collaborate with campus personnel to prepare lessons and materials to address students’ learning needs and work with individuals or small groups to close learning gaps.

The role emphasizes supporting students to meet state standards, with experience in classroom management and effective communication essential. This position is district-wide and temporary.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of academic needs of students in assigned area.
  • Knowledge of Accelerated Instruction Plan goals and implementation.
  • Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned.
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with foundation teachers to develop instructional design for each student assigned.
  • Implement instructional program for assigned students targeting areas of need as designed by the classroom teacher or Instructional Coordinator/Facilitator.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, technology, and equipment reflecting learners' styles and needs.
  • Conduct ongoing formative assessments and report results to teacher or Instructional Coordinator/Facilitator.
  • Document daily tutoring activities and outcomes.

Primary Purpose

Provide students supplemental instructional services with appropriate learning activities in targeted areas of core curriculum to help fulfill their potential for intellectual growth. Collaborate with campus personnel to prepare lessons and instructional materials to address students’ learning needs. Work with individual or small groups of students to provide supplemental instructional services to close learning gaps, so students will successfully interact with grade level material in the regular classroom and meet state standards on assessments.

Qualifications
Education/Certification
  • High School Diploma
  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
Certification
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate preferred but not required with required endorsements or required 9 minimum hours in the subject and level assigned. Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned
Major Responsibilities and Duties

Experience
  • At least one year of student teaching or approved internship
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Collaborate with foundation teachers to develop instructional design for eachstudent assigned.
  • Implement instructional program for assigned students targeting areas ofneed as designed by the classroom teacher or Instructional Coordinator/Facilitator..
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities,materials, technology, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles andneeds of students assigned.
  • Conduct ongoing formative assessments of student achievement andregularly discuss/report results to teacher or Instructional Coordinator/Facilitator.
  • Document daily: students tutored, times tutored, and skills addressed and assessed.
  • If required, maintain a daily “Extra Duty Request” form to reflect actualtime spent tutoring. Complete and sign the form at the end of each week.
  • Create a work environment conducive to learning and appropriate for thephysical, social, and emotional development of each student.
  • Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior.according to student behavior plans and Student Code of Conduct.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students,equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with students, principals, and teachers.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with staff and students.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Be a positive role model for students and support mission of school district.

  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.
  • Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
