Job summary

North Carolina A&T State University seeks a Temporary EHS Technician to operate and maintain fire alarms, life safety and hood systems across campus, and to inspect new or renovated buildings. The role involves coordinating repairs and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

The ideal candidate may have a High School diploma with competencies, or a safety-focused degree with related experience. Typical work hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with a temporary full-time appointment and on-site

Qualifications

• Minimum: High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
• Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in a safety-related discipline, or a combination of education and safety-related experience.
• Preferred: Documented evidence of attendance at a technical school or community college with training in occupational and life safety and three (3) years of experience working with fire alarms and life safety systems.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain, coordinate the repair and upgrade of fire alarms, sprinkler, fire extinguishers, life safety and hood systems.
• Perform building inspections and construction monitoring of all new and renovated campus buildings.
• Communicate regulations clearly and accurately; implement procedures to ensure safety standards.
• Interact with faculty, staff, students, the public and external agencies; manage sensitive matters professionally.

Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position

This position is primarily responsible to operate, maintain, coordinate the repair and upgrade of the University’s fire alarms, sprinkler, fire extinguishers, life safety and hood systems. This position also performs building inspections and construction monitoring of all new and renovated building construction on campus.
The position must effectively communicate regulations in a concise and accurate manner, completes duties in a responsible manner, establishes and recommends procedural changes to ensure safety standards and methods are applied, and determines corrective actions when unsafe conditions are identified. This position works with a diverse group including faculty, staff, students, the public as well as external agency representative and must manage sensitive matters in a professional manner.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The purpose of the Environmental Health and Safety Office is to provide a variety of Environmental Health and Safety services to all administrative units, student programs and all academic schools and departments. Services include: risk assessment (hazard analysis, risk identification, loss control safety measures for the University), response to on-campus calls regarding fire alarm malfunctions, installation and service, and to reduce the actual loss of labor and equipment resources in the administration of services.

Work Hours 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM; Monday - Friday
