Cite-checking will be a major focus of this position. The successful candidate must be able to read and understand the arguments presented in legal briefs, independently verify that the cited cases, statutes, and administrative records support those arguments, and proactively flag anything unclear or potentially incorrect. This position is best suited for a highly detail-oriented paralegal who is knowledgeable about California courts and procedures, comfortable working independently, and prepared to hit the ground running.

Responsibilities
  • Cite-check briefs and verify citations to case law, statutes, and administrative records
  • Confirm that cited authorities accurately support the attorney's argument
  • Identify and raise questions regarding incomplete, unclear, or potentially inaccurate citations
  • Hyperlink briefs and prepare tables of authorities and tables of contents
  • Format and finalize complex legal documents using Microsoft Word styles
  • Prepare, organize, index, and compile administrative records, appendices, exhibits, and excerpts of record
  • Assist with discovery, including document review for privilege and relevance
  • Use Logikcull, Relativity, or similar document-review platforms
  • Draft and prepare pleadings, cost bills, case management statements, Judicial Council forms, discovery documents, and Public Records Act requests
  • Format ballot initiatives, referenda, and related legal documents
  • Conduct basic legal and factual research using Westlaw, CourtListener, and other online resources
  • Retrieve cases and monitor court dockets
  • Organize and analyze case-related data using Excel and pivot tables
  • Prepare PowerPoint presentations and visual materials for hearings and client presentations
  • Participate in weekly paralegal meetings regarding deadlines, calendars, and workload
  • Provide additional litigation and administrative support as needed
Required Qualifications

  • Current qualification under California Business and Professions Code • 6450
  • At least three years of paralegal experience

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF software
  • Excellent writing, grammar, proofreading, and organizational skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to identify and raise potential issues rather than overlook them
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines and priorities
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Technically savvy and comfortable learning new systems
  • Positive and collaborative approach
  • Authorized to work in the United States
Preferred Qualifications
  • Environmental, land-use, CEQA, public-interest, municipal, or nonprofit law experience
  • California appellate experience
  • Experience preparing administrative records and excerpts of record
  • Experience with Logikcull, Relativity, or similar document-review platforms
  • Familiarity with Claude, Harvey, or similar legal AI platforms
  • Direct environmental or CEQA experience is preferred but not required. Candidates with strong California litigation and cite-checking experience from another practice area are encouraged to apply.
Hybrid Schedule

The current expectation is approximately one to two onsite days per week, with flexibility regarding which days. A formal two-day onsite requirement is still being discussed and may be implemented in the future. Candidates must be able to commute to the San Francisco office and be comfortable with this potential requirement. Occasional extended hours may be required to support active litigation or meet filing deadlines.
