Nature of WorkAn Educational Assistant VI requires bilingual abilities for the classification. An Educational assistant VI provides individual and small group support and personal assistance, often in an English Language Development class, small speech/language class, standard or special purpose educational program, to students with distinct and exceptional educational needs and challenges as determined by a licensed specialist. The primary purpose of positions in this class, which distinguishes it from positions of other classes, is to screen and assess the educational needs of students, provide instructional assistance to students in a classroom, and charting and recording results. Clerical and word processing or computer data base updating duties may be assigned to positions as time permits, but are not considered primary tasks and do not require a large percentage of time. A position of this class require bilingual abilities.
A position of this class may be assigned full-time to a student with a physical impairment that requires the employee to assist with school tasks the student cannot perform, such as attending class and taking notes; carrying books; adapting written school materials; personal cleanliness and hygiene; administering medication; setting up or operating specially adapted equipment; food preparation and feeding the student; and assisting the student to communicate with teachers, classmates, and others.
A position of this class may tutor students, individually or in small groups, providing instructional assistance in a variety of subjects or courses; administers and scores standardized tests; and maintains student records in conformance with government regulations.
Examples of WorkThese duties are illustrative only. Other duties may be assigned.
High school diploma or equivalent. Previous course work and training, or child development, childcare or instructional assistance experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge and abilities needed to perform the work. Ability to prove Highly Qualified status under NCLB, or pass Bethel School District's “Highly Qualified Assessment”. Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training that ensures the ability to perform the work may be substituted for the required experience.
Upon offer of employment applicants must obtain a fingerprint clearance from the Oregon Department of Education through a process authorized by the Bethel School District. Applicants would be responsible for the one-time fingerprint clearance fee.
