Job Description

Nature of Work

An Educational Assistant – Comprehensive Support provides instructional, behavioral, social-emotional, and physical assistance to students with a range of needs as determined by licensed staff. This position supports students individually, in small groups, or across entire classrooms within general education and special education settings.

In alignment with Bethel’s district-wide commitment to inclusion, this role contributes to creating welcoming, responsive environments where all students—especially those with the highest needs—can access the resources, relationships, and opportunities they deserve in their neighborhood schools. Educational Assistants help implement inclusive practices that remove barriers, foster belonging, and support students in thriving alongside their peers. The district will offer and expect staff to engage in professional development to ensure staff are equipped to meet the diverse needs of students. These professional development opportunities will include strategies for supporting inclusive practices, behavior support, and small group instruction.

Assignments may include:

  • Academic support and instructional reinforcement
  • Implementation of individualized behavior support plans (BSPs)
  • Emotional and behavioral regulation support
  • Supporting inclusion practices through collaboration with licensed staff and school teams

Examples of Work

  • Facilitates instructional activities and use of materials developed by licensed staff
  • Supports students in acquiring academic, functional, communication, and social-emotional skills
  • Administers and scores assessments; maintains documentation and daily progress records
  • Implements BSPs and follows Individualize Education Programs (IEPs) using proactive strategies such as pre-correction, positive reinforcement, and de-escalation
  • Provides assistance with personal care including toileting and hygiene routines
  • Uses adapted communication tools to support student participation and access
  • Supports inclusive instruction in general education classrooms and transitions across school settings
  • Participates in team planning, rounds, and debriefs focused on student inclusion and progress
  • Communicates effectively with students, teachers, specialists, and families
  • Models inclusive, strengths-based language and practices

Supervision

Support is provided under the professional guidance of licensed staff (teachers, specialists) and administratively supervised by building or special services administrators. Work is aligned with state and federal guidelines, IEP requirements, and Bethel’s inclusive practices.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Attributes

  • Ability to assist with instruction and implement individualized supports

  • Ability to observe and respond appropriately to student behaviors and social emotional needs

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow legal and ethical standards

  • Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance
  • Ability to learn safe lifting and proper physical positioning techniques to place students in student desks or in passenger vehicles, as required by the position
  • Ability to safely and proficiently operate standard office and audio-visual equipment, as required by the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience or coursework in child development, special education, behavioral support, or related fields
  • Ability to prove Highly Qualified status under ESEA or pass Bethel School District’s “Highly Qualified” assessment
  • Completion of required training (e.g., Oregon-approved de-escalation, restraint, and seclusion training; toileting, health, and feeding protocols; and inclusive practices PD) provided by the District
  • Physical ability to perform lifting, hygiene support, and mobility assistance
  • Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training that demonstrates the ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the role

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, bend, and kneel for extended periods throughout the workday
  • Ability to move quickly in response to student needs or safety concerns
  • Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 25 pounds independently
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance (e.g., assisting students with mobility needs or transfers)
  • Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to assist students with physical disabilities or behavioral needs, including implementing de-escalation or safety protocols when trained and necessary
  • Ability to push or pull wheelchairs or adaptive equipment, as need and assigned
  • Visual and auditory ability to effectively monitor student behavior and ensure safety
  • Ability to perform duties both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather

Upon offer of employment applicants must obtain a fingerprint clearance from the Oregon Department of Education through a process authorized by the Bethel School District. Applicants would be responsible for the one-time fingerprint clearance fee.
