Temp: Support Assistant (TSA) - Southern High

Job Summary

Under the direction of the supervising teacher or administrator, Temporary Support Assistants (TSA) assist teachers with the physical, emotional, behavioral, and instructional needs of students at the Preschool/PreK, elementary, and secondary grade levels. TSA supervises students throughout the school day, both in the school building and on work sites, carrying out instructional tasks, supporting self‑care, and collecting data for professional staff based upon individual student objectives. TSA may perform any listed duties independently or as part of a team, depending on location and staffing.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities
  • Supervise students during the school day in the building and on work sites; assist on/off bus, lift/push students, and monitor entry/exit.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene and self‑help skills such as toileting, feeding, and grooming throughout the day and at off‑site locations.
  • Support students during instruction, reinforcing subjects introduced by teachers in one‑on‑one or small groups, and implement instructional plans and activities as directed.
  • Observe and manage student behavior in classrooms, lunch areas, playgrounds, and other learning environments according to approved procedures.
  • Collect data on student performance regarding instructional and behavioral goals and provide it to the supervising teacher.
  • Implement behavior strategies and supports for students with social, emotional, or behavioral concerns.
  • Follow AACPS policies and procedures while assisting students and staff in the building and in community‑based settings.
  • Participate in professional development, attending workshops and in‑service training related to special education, seizures, and disruptive behavior.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
  • Formal academic courses or training in child development with specific applications to special education preferred.

Experience

  • None required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to exercise patience and work with students who have physical, mental, emotional, and/or multiple disabilities.
  • Reliable, punctual, and regular attendance is essential, as the role requires direct in‑person service.
  • Employ a variety of teaching styles to meet diverse learner needs.
  • Effective communication with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency with business technology (e.g., video/web conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite).

Licenses & Certifications

  • Hold or be eligible for a Class C Driver’s License (DL) issued by Maryland or state of legal residence.
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.

Driving Requirements

  • Driving is required for official Board business.
  • Personal vehicle.
Physical Demands / Working Conditions

Standing, walking, sitting, keyboarding, talking, hearing, and driving are part of the role. Lifting up to 50 pounds may be required. The position is primarily indoor but may include moderate noise and routine travel within the county.

Travel Requirements
  • Approximately 20% of the time traveling within the county to assist at other schools, parks, and libraries.
