Temp: Support Assistant (TSA) - Annapolis Middle

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the supervising teacher or administrator, Temporary Support Assistants (TSA) assist teachers with the physical, emotional, behavioral, and instructional needs of students at the Preschool/Pre‑K, elementary, and secondary grade levels. This includes supervising students during the school day in the building and on work sites, carrying out instructional tasks, supporting self‑care, and collecting data on student progress.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervise students throughout the school day in the building and on work sites, including assisting on/off bus and ensuring they reach the correct location.
• Assist students with social behavior, personal hygiene, and self‑help skills (e.g., toileting, feeding, grooming).
• Support students during instruction and curriculum tasks, reinforcing subjects introduced by the teacher in one‑on‑one or small groups, and implement instructional plans as directed.
• Observe and manage student behavior in classrooms, lunch areas, playgrounds, and other learning environments according to approved procedures.
• Collect and record data on student performance relative to instructional and behavioral goals.
• Support students with social, emotional, and behavioral concerns, implementing behavior strategies and supports.
• Follow AACPS policies and procedures while assisting students and staff in the building and in community‑based settings.
• Participate in professional development, including workshops and in‑service training related to special education needs, seizures, and disruptive behavior.
• Perform other related duties within the same classification or lower.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Formal coursework or training in child development with applications to special education preferred.
• Demonstrated patience and ability to work with students who have physical, mental, emotional, or multiple disabilities.
• Reliable attendance and punctuality required.
• Ability to employ various teaching styles to meet diverse learner needs.
• Effective communication with diverse populations.
• Proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., video/web conferencing, Microsoft Office).

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

• Driver’s License Class C (non‑commercial) issued by Maryland or state of legal residence.
• Reliable transportation; personal vehicle required.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

• Driving required to conduct board business within the scope of the position.
• Personal vehicle must be available.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS

• Standing, walking, sitting, keyboarding, speaking, hearing, and driving typically below 50% of the time.
• Lifting up to 50 pounds as required.
• Work primarily in indoor school or office settings; moderate noise levels.
• Daily travel up to 20% within the county for site visits.
