Title

Support Assistant (TSA) – Arundel High

Job Summary

Under the direction of a supervising teacher or administrator, Temporary Support Assistants (TSA) assist teachers with the physical, emotional, behavioral, and instructional needs of students across Preschool/PreK, elementary, and secondary grade levels. The TSA supervises students throughout the school day in the building and on work sites, carries out instructional tasks, supports self‑care, and collects data as outlined by professional staff based on individual student objectives.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities
  • Participate in routine supervision of students in the school building and worksite/community environment, including assisting on/off buses, lifting and pushing students, and monitoring entry and exit to ensure they reach the correct location.
  • Assist students with developing proper social behavior, personal hygiene, and self‑help skills, including toileting, feeding, and grooming as assigned throughout the school day and off‑site.
  • Support students during instruction and curriculum tasks, reinforcing subjects introduced by the teacher in one‑on‑one or small groups, and implement instructional plans as designated by the job coach or teacher. Provide reinforcement techniques to keep students focused and on task.
  • Observe and manage student behavior in classrooms, lunch areas, playgrounds, and other learning environments according to approved procedures.
  • Observe and gather data regarding student performance on instructional and behavioral goals and provide data collection to the supervising teacher.
  • Support students with social, emotional, and behavioral concerns, implementing behavior strategies and supports.
  • Follow AACPS policies and procedures while assisting students and staff in the building and off‑site work training activities and community‑based settings.
  • Participate in professional development; attend workshops and in‑service training for specialized care needs, seizures, disruptive behavior, etc., as provided by the Board of Education.
  • Perform related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required. Formal academic courses or training in child development with special education application is preferred.
  • Experience: None.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated patience, ability to work with students of diverse and multiple disabilities, punctuality, effective communication with diverse populations, and proficiency with business technology applications such as Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to learners' needs.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Hold or be eligible for a Driver's License (Class C) issued by Maryland or state of legal residence.
  • Daily reliable transportation access required.
Driving Requirements
  • Driving is required for Board business within the scope of employment.
  • Personal vehicle necessary.

  • Standing: less than 33 % of the time.
  • Walking: 33 %–66 % of the time.
  • Sitting: 33 %–66 % of the time.
  • Keyboarding: less than 33 % of the time.
  • Talking: 33 %–66 % of the time.

  • Additional duties as required.
Travel Requirements
  • Approximately 20 % of the day involves travel within the county to assist at other schools, parks, libraries, and community locations.
