Title: Temp: Support Assistant

Location: Corkran Middle, Glen Burnie, Maryland

Job Summary

Under the direction of the supervising teacher or administrator, Temporary Support Assistants (TSA) assist teachers with the physical, emotional, behavioral, and instructional needs of students at the Preschool/PreK, elementary and secondary grade levels. TSA supervise students throughout the school day, both in the school building and on work sites, carrying out instructional tasks, supporting self‑care, and collecting data as outlined by professional staff based on individual student objectives. The role can involve performing any of the listed duties independently or with support, depending on location and staffing.

Essential Duties / Responsibilities
  • Participate in routine supervision of students during the school day within the school building and/or worksite/community environment, including assisting on/off bus, lifting, pushing students in equipment, and monitoring entry and exit to ensure students reach correct locations.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene and self‑help skills such as toileting, feeding, and grooming throughout the day and at off‑site locations.
  • Support students during instruction and curriculum tasks, reinforcing subjects introduced by the teacher, providing instruction in one‑on‑one or small groups, and implementing instructional plans and activities designated by the job coach or teacher.
  • Observe and manage student behavior in classrooms, lunch areas, playgrounds, and other learning environments according to approved procedures.
  • Collect data regarding student performance on instructional and behavioral goals; provide data to the supervising teacher.
  • Support students with social, emotional, and behavior concerns, implementing behavior strategies and supports.
  • Follow AACPS policies and procedures while assisting students and staff in the building and off‑site work training activities and community‑based settings.
  • Participate in professional development, attending workshops and in‑service training for related care needs such as seizures and disruptive behavior as provided by the Board of Education.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
  • Formal academic courses or training in child development with applications to special education preferred.
Experience
  • None required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Patience and ability to work with students with physical, mental, emotional, and/or multiple disabilities.
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is essential for direct service provision.
  • Use of diverse teaching styles to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Effective communication with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency with business technology applications, including video/web conferencing and Microsoft Office Suite.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Hold or be eligible for a Driver's License (DL) Class C Non‑Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence.
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.
Driving Requirements
  • Required to conduct board‑business within the scope of employment.
  • Personal vehicle required.
Physical Demands / Working Conditions
  • Standing, walking, sitting, keyboarding, talking, hearing, and driving about one‑third to two‑thirds of the time.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds about one‑third to two‑thirds of the time.
  • Work may involve a moderate noise level and indoor environments over two‑thirds of the time.
  • Travel: up to 20 % daily within the county for school, parks, libraries, and other locations.
