Job summary

DC Public Library is seeking a Teen Aide to support operations at the central Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library or neighborhood branches. The role includes assisting teens, helping with programs, and creating outreach content.

As part of the Teen Council, you will learn through workshops and on-the-job experiences, with a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. Applicants must be DC residents aged 14–19 and commit through August 2027.

Qualifications

• Must be a resident of the District of Columbia.
• Must be between the age of 14 -19 years old at time of appointment (age subject to verification)
• Maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA if enrolled in school or possess a High School Diploma or GED
• Able to commit to working through August 2027 at a DC Public Library
• Applicants under the age of 18 will be required to obtain a work permit if selected
• Ability to deal courteously with library customers and staff.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• Ability to operate standard office equipment such as copiers and fax machines.

Responsibilities

• Assist customers with basic questions or problems in operating library equipment, including public access computers, printers, copiers, etc.
• Participates in special projects and/or focus group discussions to boost library services to teens.
• Write blog or social media posts about issues affecting teens.
• Work with staff to design and run programs for teens, including one Capstone project designed, led, and evaluated by the aide.
• Assist staff with community outreach and promotes the library to their peers.
• Assist in preparation for library programs by moving, arranging and setting up library furniture and equipment.
• Attend all mandatory trainings and workshops.
• Create book displays to encourage reading.
• Keeps giveaway materials in order and monitors bulletin boards and other postings.
