The Communities: The attractive towns of Amherst and Mont Vernon provide their own elementary schools and share the Amherst Middle and Souhegan High Schools. SAU #39, serving as the Central Office to the schools, is located at the historic Brick School on the Amherst green. Mont Vernon and Amherst are located in south-central N.H., offering proximity to the cultural and recreational activities of New England. The neighboring towns are rich in traditions and classic New England flavor. Amherst has many well preserved, beautifully renovated, historic buildings in the center of town. Many residents run small businesses in town, while others work in nearby cities or commute to jobs in Massachusetts. Details about the towns are found on their respective websites: www.town.mont-vernon.nh.us; www.amherstnh.gov/.

Governance: SAU #39 and its schools are governed by four boards of education: Amherst and Mont Vernon each have five member school boards. Souhegan High School is governed by a seven member board. The fourth board is the SAU #39 board comprising members of the three boards and meets to approve a central office budget, to elect a new superintendent of schools, and to develop policies common to the school districts. The incoming Superintendent of Schools may expect, on average, one school board meeting per week for regular school business.

The Central Office: The Superintendent of Schools, as the educational leader of SAU #39, is responsible for all aspects of the students' education, the schools and the Central Office. There is very strong support by certificated, experienced professionals that constitute the SAU #39 Leadership Team. Highly capable personnel are staffed in the following Central Office departments: Office of the Superintendent of Schools and Business Administrator, Directors of Human Resources, Curriculum and Professional Development, Special Instructional Services, Finance, Technology, Food Services and Buildings and Grounds.
