Responsibilities

  • Monitor emerging technology trends and inform strategy.
  • Provide analytical leadership for technology assessment, roadmapping, and valuations.
  • Manage venture capital and external innovation relationships.
  • Conduct studies of emerging technologies.
  • Support decisions across generation, energy storage, transmission, and distribution.
  • Facilitate pilot project plans and test plans.
  • Apply project management policies including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and risk management.
  • Lead projects from opportunity to closeout and transfer.
  • Develop and implement partnership strategies.
  • Build relationships with stakeholders, startups, universities, and VCs.
  • Lead industry benchmarking and integrate insights into strategy and practices.
  • Support regulatory filings and technology development communications.
  • Represent the organization at forums and associations.
  • Lead education sessions and tours.
  • Maintain accurate project records and documentation.
  • Improve innovation and portfolio management processes.
  • Assess and prioritize R&D activities with other lines of business.
  • Support regulatory programs and filings for pilots.
  • Contribute technical and analytical expertise to resolve problems.

Job description

• Monitor emerging technology trends, market developments, and industry activity to identify opportunities and inform ETO strategy
• Provide analytical leadership for technology assessment, evaluation, road mapping, and emerging technology valuations
• Manage emerging technology-focused venture capital and external innovation relationships
• Conduct engineering, research, and related studies of emerging technologies
• Support technology development decisions across generation, energy storage, transmission and distribution, transformers, energy efficiency and demand response, electric vehicles, robotics, and artificial intelligence
• Facilitate development and execution of pilot project plans
• Develop test plans, analyze test data, and communicate test results
• Apply project management and control policies and standards, including planning, scheduling, resource coordination, risk management, and performance monitoring
• Lead projects from opportunity identification and assessment through development, demonstration, technology transfer, and closeout
• Develop and implement partnership strategies
• Build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders, industry partners, startups, universities, venture capital firms, and other external organizations
• Lead industry benchmarking and integrate external insights into ETO strategy and innovation practices
• Support regulatory filings and technology development communications
• Represent Duke Energy at customer forums, industry organizations, trade associations, and other external engagements
• Lead education sessions, including lunch and learns, seminars, and tours
• Maintain accurate project records, documentation, and files
• Improve innovation, project lifecycle, technology transfer, and portfolio management processes
• Assess and prioritize R&D activities with other Lines of Business and align them with technology roadmaps and strategic objectives
• Support legislative and regulatory programs, documentation, and filings for pilots and programs
• Contribute technical and analytical expertise to identify, analyze, and resolve specialized problems

Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Engineering, or Computer Science
  • Minimum of 7 years of related work experience
  • In lieu of degree, a High School Diploma/GED and a minimum of 11 years of related work experience
  • Understanding of fundamental engineering theories, principles, and practices
  • Experience conducting technology assessments, gathering and analyzing industry data, developing business cases, evaluating alternatives, and making data-driven recommendations
  • Understanding of technology trends and drivers shaping the electric utility industry
  • Ability to work independently and manage projects and initiatives with ambiguous or evolving objectives
  • Ability to lead and facilitate cross-functional teams and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Project management and project controls experience, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, resource coordination, risk management, and performance monitoring
  • Experience in utility planning, operations, or strategy
  • Understanding of generation, transmission and distribution, and customer-facing business segments
  • Understanding of the utility regulatory construct and regulatory and policy considerations affecting emerging technologies
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, Excel, PowerPoint, Planner, SharePoint, Power BI, and Copilot
  • Normal office and some field working conditions, including substation and distribution environments
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • Must possess all basic/required qualifications
