Job summary

Duke Energy in North Carolina is seeking an Engineer III/Senior Engineer to develop and maintain production standards for T/T and T/D substations, applying industry codes and safety practices. You will coordinate standard development, provide engineering guidance to internal teams and contractors, and use AutoCAD/Inventor to produce templates, drawings, and design guides.

Onboarding enables remote and onsite work after ramp-up.

Qualifications

  • ABET-accredited BS in Engineering or MS in lieu of BS
  • PE registration preferred or MS in engineering in lieu of BS
  • 4+ years engineering experience for Engineer III; 6+ years for Senior Engineer
  • Experience with substation design software and utility industry practices
  • Familiarity with NEC/NESC and NERC FAC-008 standards

Job description

  • Develop and maintain production standards for the physical design of new and existing T/T and T/D substations
  • Apply procedures, codes, standards, and industry practices to develop substation design standards, drawings, and material CUs
  • Perform work in accordance with the Duke Energy Safety Manual and applicable federal, state, and local requirements
  • Coordinate standard development activities while balancing multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Assist other engineering and C&M teams as necessary
  • Communicate standards updates and technical guidance to internal engineering teams, contractors, and stakeholders
  • Provide engineering and technical expertise in substation physical design
  • Develop specifications, design guides, template drawings, CAD blocks, item numbers, compatible units, and multilevel compatible units
  • Improve consistency, safety, constructability, and efficiency across substation physical design work products
  • Work from remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period
  • Attend occasional field and factory visits
Requirements
  • Engineer III: Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program, or Master's degree in engineering in lieu of the B.S.
  • Engineer III: Minimum of 4 years engineering experience
  • Senior Engineer: Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer; Master's degree in engineering considered in lieu of the B.S.
  • Senior Engineer: Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience, or 5 years with state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Familiarity with substation design software such as AutoCAD and Inventor
  • Understanding and experience with NERC Compliance Standards, including FAC-008
  • Ability to interpret design codes including NEC and NESC
  • Demonstrated knowledge of T/T and T/D substation design
  • Experience with construction project work, Maximo, CAST Pro, TIM, and other work tools
  • Experience with substation physical layout, grounding, conduit/cable trench, foundations, structures, equipment mounting, or bus design
  • Experience developing or maintaining engineering standards, design guides, or template drawings
  • Experience coordinating with design engineering, construction, maintenance, asset management, vendors, or other cross-functional stakeholders
  • Knowledge of engineering theories and principles, project management, and utility industry practices
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future
  • Reliable, consistent transportation required
  • Must live within a reasonable commute, not greater than 50 miles one way, to the designated Duke Energy facility
