Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer to support a large-scale Documentation Recovery initiative within a complex IT environment.
The Technical Writer will create, standardize, organize, and maintain authoritative technical documentation by working closely with Business Analysts, IT subject-matter experts, and IT leadership. The role will transform technical knowledge, discovery findings, and process information into clear, accurate, consistent, and maintainable documentation.
The documentation produced will support cybersecurity, IT operations, knowledge transfer, incident response, disaster recovery, business continuity, and long-term operational resilience.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain clear, professional technical documentation using standardized templates and documentation conventions.
- Create and maintain:
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Operational procedures
- System and application documentation
- Infrastructure documentation
- Runbooks
- Support procedures
- Administrative procedures
- Knowledge-base articles
- Create and maintain documentation supporting:
- Incident response
- Disaster recovery
- Business continuity
- System restoration
- Technology recovery
- Translate complex technical information and SME interviews into accurate, easy-to-understand documentation.
- Create and refine technical diagrams, workflows, process maps, architecture-supporting visuals, and documentation graphics using Microsoft Visio.
- Use Microsoft 365 extensively, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, and related collaboration/document-management tools.
- Apply consistent terminology, formatting, version control, metadata, document ownership, review dates, and change history.
- Collaborate with Business Analysts to transform discovery outputs, requirements, inventories, and process maps into finalized documentation.
- Conduct document reviews with technical SMEs and reconcile feedback.
- Verify technical accuracy and prepare documentation for approval and publication.
- Help establish reusable templates, style standards, naming conventions, repository structures, and documentation lifecycle practices.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 5+ years of demonstrated Technical Writing experience producing professional documentation for complex IT or technology environments.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft 365, particularly:
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft SharePoint
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Microsoft Teams
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Visio for technical diagrams, workflows, process maps, and supporting visuals.
- Demonstrated experience creating:
- SOPs
- Runbooks
- System documentation
- Operational procedures
- Knowledge articles
- Comparable technical deliverables
- Strong editing, information architecture, document organization, formatting, and quality-control skills.
- Ability to work directly with technical SMEs across infrastructure, applications, service delivery, cybersecurity, or related IT disciplines.
- Exceptional ability to translate technical concepts and SME knowledge into clear, concise, accurate, and usable documentation.
- Ability to manage multiple documents and review cycles while maintaining consistency and attention to detail.
Preferred Skills
- Experience documenting cybersecurity, infrastructure, incident response, disaster recovery, business continuity, or IT service-management environments.
- Experience with documentation recovery, knowledge management, or large-scale documentation-standardization initiatives.
- Experience designing or administering SharePoint-based documentation libraries, including templates, metadata, and lifecycle practices.
- Familiarity with ITIL, NIST, CIS, or other recognized IT/security frameworks.
- Experience working in government or other highly regulated environments.
Education & Certifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, English, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related field, OR equivalent relevant professional experience.
- Demonstrated experience and quality of prior work are more important than a specific certification.
Preferred:
- Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC)
- ITIL Foundation
- Comparable technical-writing or IT certification
Certifications are preferred but do not substitute for demonstrated experience and an excellent portfolio.

Work Environment
This is a 100% onsite position in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with light travel to offices and facilities throughout Spartanburg County. The engagement is full-time, approximately 40 hours per week, with an initial 12-month term and possible extension.
Interview Process
The interview process includes a resume and portfolio review followed by one panel interview with IT leadership and subject-matter experts.
