Job summary

Baker Hughes in Houston is seeking a Technical Support Engineer to join our field engineering and service team. You will oversee AVR system inspection, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning across power generation, industrial, or marine applications.

You will support contract setup, maintenance, downtime mitigation, and provide technical reports, with occasional travel to customer sites; strong knowledge of generator controls and high‑voltage environments required.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical discipline.
  • Proven customer-facing technical experience.
  • Hands-on experience with AVR/generator controls.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites.

Responsibilities

  • Perform AVR software configuration, commissioning, testing and validation.
  • Support field engineering activities including installation and startup.
  • Conduct routine and outage maintenance for reliable operation.
  • Diagnose complex electrical/control issues with diagnostic tools.
  • Prepare technical reports on testing, maintenance and warranty activities.
  • Ensure safety standards when working with high-voltage equipment.
  • Coordinate with suppliers, customers and warranty teams on issue resolution.

Brush Power Generation is searching for an experienced Technical Support Engineer to work alongside our Engineering and Service staff to oversee the inspection, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning of BRUSH Voltage Regulation Systems (AVRs) in power generation, industrial, or marine applications.

The Technical Support Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of contract set up, maintenance & troubleshooting, system calibration, technical support & documentation including warranty investigations. There will also be a need to support the commercial division to support detailed technical AVR fit and solution discussions when required.

As a Technical Support Engineer , you will be responsible for:
  • Performing contract‑specific AVR software configuration, commissioning, testing, and validation activities prior to system deployment
  • Supporting field engineering activities, including installation, startup, commissioning, and customer acceptance testing
  • Conducting routine and outage‑related maintenance activities to ensure reliable system operation
  • Diagnosing and resolving complex electrical and control system issues using advanced diagnostic tools and methodologies
  • Performing inspections to identify wear, corrosion, loose connections, damaged wiring, and component degradation
  • Implementing preventive maintenance programs to improve reliability and reduce equipment downtime
  • Calibrating AVR systems to ensure proper voltage regulation and optimal equipment performance
  • Providing technical support to customers and internal teams, including fault analysis, troubleshooting guidance, and technical recommendations
  • Preparing technical reports covering testing, maintenance activities, system performance, and warranty investigations
  • Ensuring compliance with safety standards and procedures when working with high‑voltage equipment and industrial environments
  • Managing projects from concept through commissioning, including planning, scheduling, supplier coordination, and technical oversight
  • Acting as a technical liaison with suppliers, customers, and warranty teams to support issue resolution and continuous improvement
  • Supporting commercial teams with technical evaluations, AVR fit assessments, and solution development discussions

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have a degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent industry experience
  • Demonstrate proven experience in a customer‑facing or supplier‑facing technical role
  • Have hands‑on experience working with generator excitation systems, AVR systems, or power generation equipment
  • Possess strong knowledge of generator controls, excitation systems, and AVR maintenance practices
  • Be familiar with generator OEM technologies such as BRUSH, GE, Basler, DEIF, Woodward, or equivalent systems
  • Demonstrate strong time management and multitasking capabilities within a project‑driven environment
  • Be capable of lifting equipment and performing field‑based technical activities when required
  • Possess strong communication skills and the ability to work independently or within small teams
  • Be willing to travel to customer sites as business needs require
  • Demonstrate strong troubleshooting, problem‑solving, and decision‑making abilities
Technical Expertise

Strong understanding of three‑phase electrical systems, power electronics, SCRs, and control loop principles

Knowledge of Self‑Excited (Shunt), Auxiliary Winding, and Permanent Magnet Generator (PMG) excitation systems

Proficiency with both Analog AVR and Digital AVR technologies

Ability to configure and support protection functions including under‑frequency, over‑voltage, and under‑voltage protection

Understanding of generator build‑up characteristics and field flashing requirements

Familiarity with key electrical and electronic components including:
  • Thyristors (SCRs)
  • Diodes
  • Potential Transformers (PTs)
  • Potentiometers
  • Capacitors
  • Voltage sensing and control circuits
Experience using diagnostic and testing equipment including:
  • Oscilloscopes
  • Multimeters
  • Insulation testers
  • Waveform analyzers
  • OEM configuration and diagnostic software
