Overview:
This is the first hire on the Product team, dedicated entirely to building the proprietary billing, subscription management, and CPQ platform. The role shadows the VP, Product, directly during onboarding (learning the business and the platform's requirements alongside them), and then takes ownership of the platform's day-to-day roadmap and delivery.
This is a hands-on, technical role. Real technical fluency is required: the ability to read an API spec, understand a data model, and have a detailed technical conversation with engineers without needing it translated.
Responsibilities:
Requirements & roadmap ownership:
- Shadow the VP, Product, on requirements-gathering across the platform's five core domains (billing, subscription lifecycle management, invoicing, quoting/CPQ, and procurement/provisioning) during onboarding.
- Take ownership of the platform's roadmap and backlog, maintaining a single, transparent, and prioritized backlog.
- Surface and document edge cases and workflow nuances (proration, co-terming, mid-term changes, multi-year commitments, renewals, credits, refunds, and overages) as part of ongoing requirements work.
Business & commerce modeling support:
- Translate business requirements (pricing rules, licensing structures, discount and margin logic) into clear technical specs and acceptance criteria that engineers can build against.
- Support modeling of commerce scenarios common to the business: monthly, annual, and multi-year terms; vendor price changes at renewal; usage-based and committed-consumption products.
- Help ensure deal economics (margin, discount, and total contract value) are calculated and surfaced accurately within the platform's quoting flow.
Integration coordination:
- Partner directly with the Business Systems (Salesforce) team on integration requirements and data contracts for accounts, opportunities, quotes, and assets.
- Partner with the Data & Insights team on data flows into and out of the platform, including reporting and analytics dependencies.
- Support definition of how the platform interoperates with vendor APIs for provisioning, subscription sync, and pricing.
Billing integrity & reconciliation:
- Support the definition of reconciliation processes that keep subscription state in agreement across the platform, vendor systems, CRM, and finance.
- Help identify and document exception paths for mid-cycle changes and out-of-band billing adjustments.
- Treat billing accuracy as a shared outcome with engineering, not something resolved downstream by operations.
Delivery & agile execution:
- Run agile ceremonies (backlog refinement, sprint planning, reviews) directly with the dedicated engineering team as ownership transitions from the VP, Product.
- Support UAT planning and coordinate testing and validation ahead of releases.
- Track and report progress against the roadmap approved by the VP, Product, and the Platform Steering Committee.
Required Skills & Qualifications (must-haves):
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 4+ years of experience as a product manager or product owner, including at least 2 years specifically on a B2B, billing, subscription, or CPQ system, or a comparably complex commerce platform.
- Technical fluency is non-negotiable; comfortable with API specs, data models, and direct technical conversations with engineers.
- Working knowledge of subscription commerce mechanics: recurring billing, proration, co-terming, renewals, dunning, and credit memos.
- Familiarity with Salesforce and/or ERP systems (NetSuite) as integration targets.
- Comfortable running agile ceremonies directly with an engineering team; hands‑on experience with backlog and roadmap tools (Jira, Confluence, or similar).
- Working proficiency with SQL or a similar query tool — able to investigate data questions independently rather than routing everything through engineering or analytics.
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear specs, acceptance criteria, and process documentation that both engineers and business stakeholders can act on.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications (nice-to-haves):
- Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM), or an equivalent Agile/Scrum certification.
- Salesforce certification (e.g., Salesforce Certified CPQ Specialist or Salesforce Administrator), given the depth of CRM integration this role requires.
- Experience in the IT channel — CSP, MSP, distributor, or reseller business models.
- Familiarity with revenue recognition basics (ASC 606) as they apply to multi-element arrangements.
- Prior experience shadowing a senior product leader and transitioning into ownership of a live platform roadmap.
- Exposure to Microsoft Partner Center or similar vendor marketplace/provisioning APIs.
- MBA or advanced degree in a related field.
