Technical Accounting Consultant – Software Capitalization

Location: Fully Remote in any U.S. time zone

Compensation: $90 - $110/HR

We are seeking an experienced Technical Accounting Consultant / Senior Technical Accountant / Accounting Advisory Consultant to support a software capitalization assessment and related accounting analysis. This is a hands‑on accounting role focused specifically on ASC 350-40 and internal‑use software accounting.

The ideal candidate has directly performed software capitalization assessments and is comfortable evaluating IT and software‑related projects to determine which costs should be capitalized versus expensed. This is an accounting role—not an IT or project management position—and requires someone who can independently review documentation, apply accounting guidance, and clearly support their conclusions.

What You’ll Do

• Perform ASC 350-40 assessments for software development, implementation, ERP, SaaS/cloud, and other technology‑related projects
• Evaluate costs and activities to determine appropriate capitalizable vs. operating expense (Opex) treatment
• Review Statements of Work (SOWs), vendor invoices, project documentation, contracts, and GL activity to determine the appropriate accounting treatment
• Identify potential misclassifications and recommend appropriate correcting journal entries
• Research and apply relevant U.S. GAAP guidance to support accounting conclusions
• Document accounting assessments, conclusions, and supporting rationale in a clear and audit‑ready manner
• Partner with accounting, finance, IT, and project stakeholders to gather information and resolve questions
• Review existing accounting practices and identify opportunities for improvement
• Assist with developing or enhancing software capitalization policies and procedures
• Work independently with minimal oversight and manage multiple projects or assessments as needed

What We’re Looking For

• Hands‑on experience performing ASC 350-40 / internal‑use software capitalization assessments — this is the key requirement
• Demonstrated experience determining capitalizable vs. Opex treatment for software development, implementation, ERP, SaaS/cloud, or other IT projects
• Experience reviewing SOWs, invoices, project documentation, and GL activity as part of an accounting assessment
• Ability to identify accounting misclassifications and recommend correcting journal entries
• Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and technical accounting concepts
• Excellent written communication and documentation skills, with the ability to clearly explain and support accounting conclusions
• Ability to work independently, navigate incomplete documentation, and effectively engage stakeholders with minimal direction
• CPA preferred
• Big 4, public accounting, technical accounting, or accounting advisory experience is highly valued
