The Department of Psychology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications for a full-time teaching-focused position at either the assistant or associate level to support our growing undergraduate majors. This 9-month non-tenure track position begins August 1, 2025, and is renewable yearly, contingent upon evidence of excellent teaching and the department's staffing needs. There may be potential for hiring multiple positions at the assistant level. The standard teaching load is 4 undergraduate course sections per semester, with possible course releases for service and administrative roles such as research methods or introductory courses. The university offers a well-established promotion system for non-tenure track faculty leading to 3-year and 5-year appointments, along with mentoring support. Teaching faculty are also invited to participate in shared governance. Knoxville offers an affordable cost of living, vibrant arts and culture, water sports, and outdoor activities including the Smoky Mountains National Park.
The psychology department offers two undergraduate degrees: the BA in psychology with over 1200 majors, and a BS in neuroscience with over 600 majors. The department also offers PhDs in Clinical and Counseling psychology (APA-accredited), and MA and PhD degrees in Experimental Psychology (Neuroscience and Behavior, Cognitive and Developmental Sciences, Social). We have 36 tenure-line faculty, 7 full-time non-tenure track faculty, and several part-time lecturers. We value excellence in undergraduate education and have many award-winning instructors. Applicants should hold a PhD in psychology or a related field, or anticipate earning it by December 2025. Candidates with at least five years of full-time teaching experience and a record of teaching excellence may be considered for the Associate Teaching Professor role. Preference is given to those who can teach on campus in Knoxville, especially courses in Cognition, Learning, Motivation, Research Methods, or General Psychology, and those who can contribute to our online programs, including online-only teaching. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, with opportunities for course releases.
