Job Description

TITLE: Teacher Assistant- Special Education II

Qualifications
  • Have a high school diploma.
  • Complete a Teacher Assistant Pre-Employment Training Program approved by the RI Department of Education (RIDE). Two exceptions:
    • Those with certification as a TA in another state.
    • Those with an associate degree or bachelor's degree AND who have completed coursework or other training consistent with the TA program standards.
  • Meet one of the following requirements:
    • Successfully passed the ParaPro Assessment.
    • Complete at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education.
    • Obtain an associate or higher degree.
  • Completion of Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification upon hiring.
Responsibilities
  • Communicate high and clear expectations for students.
  • Foster independence and grit in all learners.
  • Implement instructional and physical supports and at times behavior intervention strategies and program changes as directed by the Case Manager and/or related service provider(s).
  • Assist students with physical tasks and daily living skills such as eating, drinking, dressing, moving between rooms, using the bathroom, washing hands, changing diapers, etc.
  • Collect skill acquisition data.
  • Maintain CPI certification.
  • Complete Medicaid logs as directed for individual students.
  • Establish a supportive relationship with students with disabilities while fostering their independence.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, special education teachers, and related service providers to address strengths and needs of students with disabilities.
  • Participate in professional learning activities.
  • Exhibit attributes of reliable attendance, promptness, dependability, and professional ethics; use effective communication skills with students and colleagues; complete all requested forms and data collections accurately and timely; perform functions in accordance with RI Teacher Assistant Standards, RI Professional Code of Conduct, and all applicable laws and policies.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned and/or necessary to perform the functions of the position.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

The employee is regularly required to operate a keyboard, view a computer screen, and sit or stand for extended periods. Vision requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee frequently needs to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, grasp, manipulate items, move locations, lift up to 30 pounds, and engage in hands‑on physical restraints following CPI. Communication requires the ability to hear and respond to voice and other sounds in various settings and to present information orally and in writing.

Terms of Employment

Length of the contract will be determined by the Superintendent. Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the contract.

Teacher Assistant applicants must fulfill the following educational requirements: Associate’s Degree or 48 credit hours from an accredited college or university, or successful passing of the ParaPro assessment established by the RIDE, and successful completion of a 25‑hour certification course for Teacher Assistants approved by the RI Department of Education.

If selected for interview, applicants must bring the following items:

  • High School Diploma or GED and results of successful completion of Parapro Assessment test, or official college transcripts.
  • Certificate of completion of the Rhode Island Teacher Assistant Certification Program.
