Job summary

Rio Tinto Borates in California seeks a Tailings & Water Engineer to provide technical support for safe and efficient tailings storage operations. You’ll collaborate with site leadership to maintain facility integrity, develop GoldSim models, and lead drone-based assessments while coordinating withmultiple internal teams to ensure regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited engineering degree required; Master’s in Mining/Geotechnical preferred.
• Experience with GISTM compliance and tailings governance is required.
• Experience with tailings facility operations, surveillance, instrumentation, and risk management.
• Experience liaising with interdisciplinary stakeholders and managing programs/projects.
• Strong communication skills; valid driver's license; EIT preferred.

Responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day operations of the Tailings Ponds.
• Operate facilities per design intent and maintain tailings storage integrity.
• Conduct drone photogrammetry, thermal, and LiDAR scans; pursue UAV Part 107 certification.
• Develop and maintain GoldSim models for tailings and water management.
• Report to the D5 Manager and Responsible Dam Engineer on performance and incidents.
• Coordinate with EoR, Designer of Record, Projects, HSEC, and regulatory teams.
• Support compliance with Rio Tinto standards and risk management for Tailings and Water Storage Facilities.
• Participate in Tailings Audits and regulatory visits.
