Job summary

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. is seeking a Switchman to safely operate rail equipment and ensure on-time delivery for customers.

The role includes hands-on and classroom training to build a long-term career, with outdoor work in all weather and daily exposure to dynamic rail environments. You’ll work in a physically active setting, advancing through a structured program while adhering to safety rules and operating procedures.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Pre-employment physical, hearing and vision medical review; drug testing may be required.

Responsibilities

• Comply with federal, state, and railroad safety and operational regulations.
• Follow instructions from trainers, mentors or supervisors.
• Communicate with customers and team members using signals or radio to coordinate movement.
• Operate track switches to determine train/railcar routes.
• Plan and complete assigned work safely and efficiently.
• Climb on/off equipment and walk the train/rail yard to support operations.
• Handle hand brakes on railcars as needed to control movement.
• Read and understand rule books and other materials.
• Inspect railcars in movement and at rest for safety and condition.
