Job summary

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) invites you to join a long‑established railroad network with 100+ freight lines and 4,000 employees across North America. The Switchman role offers training and a path to growth in a safety‑centric, outdoor environment.

You will work with teams to move freight safely, operate switches, and use basic computer tools for reporting—while meeting customers' needs in all weather and shifts.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Must be at least 18 years old.

Responsibilities

• Comply with federal, state, and railroad safety regulations.
• Follow instruction from trainers, mentors, or supervisors.
• Communicate with customers and team members using signals or radio.
• Operate track switches to determine train routes.
• Evaluate and complete assigned work safely and efficiently.
• Climb on/off equipment and walk the length of the train or yard.
• Inspect railcars in movement and at rest.
• Connect air hoses and electrical components between locomotives or railcars.
• Use basic computer skills for electronic reporting and train documentation.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
