Job summary

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. seeks a railroad switchman to operate track switches, couple and uncouple cars, and move trains in yards and on the mainline. You will receive instructions from the dispatcher or yardmaster and relay signals to crew to start, stop, or position equipment safely.

You must have a GED or high school diploma, a valid driver's license, and at least two years of work experience. The job requires outdoor work in a 24/7 environment and offers a training rate with higher pay after

Two years of work experience.
Railroad or related industry experience is a plus.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather and in a 24/7 schedule.

Responsibilities

Conduct railcar and train movements; signal crew members for movement.
Observe, interpret, and relay signals affecting movement of a train.
Operate track switches to change direction within yard limits or on the main railroad.
Read and understand rules, timetables, bulletins, train orders, waybills, and safety instructions.
Prepare daily reports and switch lists; fill out forms including train orders.
Inspect the condition of train and equipment in movement and at rest.
Couple air and electrical connections between locomotives when making up trains.
Assist with other projects and duties as assigned.
