Job summary

UMass Memorial Health seeks a Telephone Operator to manage high-volume calls, route to appropriate offices, and promptly dispatch emergency and on-call codes. You will operate the telephone control board and paging system, supporting clinical staff during and after hours in Worcester, MA.

The position is non-exempt with a scheduled 32–40 hour work week, offers a competitive starting range, and requires a high school diploma; preferred are Medical Terminology certification, MS Office experience

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • MS Office experience, especially Excel.
  • Accurate keyboarding and strong communication skills.
  • Customer service experience is essential.
  • Ability to work all shifts, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Answers phones and routes calls to the appropriate offices or personnel; dispatch emergency Code calls to clinical personnel.
  • Operates telephone control board and paging system and dispatches messages during and after regular business hours.

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Hiring Range: $15.81 - $28.45

(based on a full time schedule of 40 hours per week).

Please note that the final offer will vary based on scheduled hours. Compensation for part-time or reduced schedules will be prorated based on scheduled weekly hours, experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.

Schedule Details: Holidays - No More Than Every Third Holiday, Sunday through Saturday

Scheduled Hours: 7a-3:30p

Shift: 1 - Day Shift, 8 Hours (United States of America)

This position includes operating telephone control board and paging system, dispatching incoming calls, and paging internal and on‑call clinical staff during and after regular business hours.

I. Major Responsibilities:
  • 1. Answers phones and routes incoming calls to appropriate offices or personnel; Dispatch emergency Code calls to clinical personnel.
  • 2. Processes paperwork in an efficient manner according to set procedures. This includes proper filing and distribution of clinical on‑call schedules and wireless devices.
II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:

Required:

  • 1. High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:

  • 1. Medical Terminology certified or equivalent experience.
Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • 1. Must have knowledge and experience with MS Office products (specifically EXCEL).
  • 2. Must have accurate keyboarding skills.
  • 3. Good verbal and written communication skills to include proper vocabulary, spelling, grammar and sentence structure.
  • 4. Good customer service skills.
  • 5. Must be able to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays as required.

Preferred:

  • 1. Previous operator/switchboard and customer service experience.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
