Job summary

Smithfield Foods, Inc. in Iowa seeks a Production Manager for swine units. You will oversee production, drive financial and production performance, and manage contracts and personnel across locations.

The role emphasizes biosecurity, animal welfare, EMS compliance, and process improvement. You will develop farm managers, monitor animal movements, and ensure on-time market sales while adhering to safety and environmental policies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Animal Science or related field with 2+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience acting as a lead by providing training, coaching or mentoring to less experienced staff or managing a process or project.
• Must have a valid state drivers license with acceptable driving record per company policy.
• Completion of Prod Spec 1 program or 2 years swine experience preferred.
• Able to work an average 45 hour week with an average 9 hour workday, which can vary frequently.
• Weekends, evenings and holidays work required as needed.
• Must be on call for emergency situations including power outages, alarms, weather, personnel shortages and environmental emergencies.
• Ability to utilize math to calculate performance for production and financial performance and to make data-based decisions.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including presenting to groups of various sizes.
• May supervise Farm Managers on multiple company sites.

Responsibilities

• Learn, understand, and implement all policies related to Biosecurity.
• Follow SIPS safety requirements and EMS processes.
• Follow animal welfare policies ensuring appropriate environment, water, feed, humane treatment, ID and health care.
• Evaluate farms' performance and outline improvement plans.
• Inspect animals for disease or injury and prescribe medication as necessary.
• Monitor and manage the schedule of animal movements.
• Responsible for market sales at target weights and manage losses and standard deviation.
• Prepare and submit closeout information after sale.
• Develop farm managers and employees to improve production and compliance.
• Participate in EMS and environmental law compliance; report issues to supervisor.
• Develop and train employees/growers to implement management systems.
• Read and understand the emergency notification process for each site.
• Other tasks as assigned.
