Job summary

Lake Superior YMCA in Grand Marais, MN, is seeking a part-time Swim Team Coach to lead age group swimmers in the evenings. You will plan practices, coach skill development, and promote YMCA values in a safe, positive environment.

The role emphasizes coaching excellence, relationship-building with members, and adherence to safety standards while supporting the Y’s equity and diversity commitments. Flexible scheduling is required.

Qualifications

• CPR, AED, Basic First Aid certified and up to date.
• Experience working with youth and competitive teams.

Responsibilities

• Conduct practices and guide skill mastery, program planning, and communication with swimmers, incorporating Y values.
• Conduct energizing, safe, and educational practices; ensure fair practice and meet experiences.
• Stay up to date on competitive swimming best practices and trends.
• Assist with collection and organization of performance data.
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with members and helps them connect with the Y.
• Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.
• Commit to a set practice schedule and attend assigned practices.
• Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
• Supervise swim team members during practices and meets as directed by Head Coach.
• Provide leadership to all swim team participants and volunteers at practice, meets, and fundraising events.
• Ensure high standards of program quality and safety per YMCA policies.
• Attend all swim meets as required by Head Coach.
• Foster an inclusive environment and support equity/diversity initiatives.

Reports to: Head Coach or Aquatics Director

Primarily hiring for evenings Monday through Thursday.

Essential Functions:

• Responsible for assuring high standards of program quality and safety in accordance with YMCA safety and risk management policies.
• Expected to be at all swim meets, following directives given by the Head Coach.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position will not have any supervisory roles.

This position operates in and around a pool area. Sometimes the floor will be slippery, or the working environment will seem humid. Noise level has the capability of being loud at times.

Physical Demands

The Swim Team Coach is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus to remain alert.

Travel

Travel may be required in various areas in Minnesota. Including, but not limited to, Grand Rapids, Brainard, Grand Marais, and the Twin Cities.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a part time position. The pool is open seven days a week and hours will depend on the requirements of the aquatics department.

Required Qualifications/Experience

• Certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid.
• Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
• Experience working with youth and competitive teams

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

• Background in competitive swimming
• Certified swim instructor, coach, or lifeguard

• Must be able to pass a background check.
